Ofloxacin/Dexamethasone is a prescription medicine that combines two active ingredients. The antibiotic ofloxacin targets bacteria that can cause infections. The corticosteroid dexamethasone reduces inflammation, swelling and irritation. This combination is used when an infection and inflammation occur together in the eye or the ear, depending on the product you use.
The medication is typically supplied as eye drops or ear drops. Your doctor or pharmacist will advise the right formulation for your condition and the correct length of treatment. Do not use this medicine beyond the recommended duration or with a different dosing plan than prescribed.
The ofloxacin component fights bacteria by stopping their ability to copy DNA, which hinders growth and helps the infection clear. The dexamethasone component reduces the immune response in the treated area, which lowers redness, itching and swelling. Together, these actions can relieve discomfort while the infection is treated.
Because the two drugs are combined, you may need fewer applications than if you used them separately. The goal is to control symptoms quickly while preventing worsening of the infection. This product is intended for short-term use under medical supervision.
Use this medicine exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose without talking to your clinician. For eye drops, wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid to form a pocket, and place the prescribed number of drops inside. Close the eye gently and press the inner corner for about a minute to prevent drainage.
For ear drops, wash your hands, lie on your side with the affected ear up, and gently straighten the ear canal. Apply the prescribed number of drops and stay in that position for a few minutes to help distribute the medicine. Replace the cap tightly and avoid touching the dropper tip with skin or ear to keep the bottle clean.
Most people tolerate Ofloxacin/Dexamethasone well, but some may feel mild burning, stinging or a temporary metallic taste after application. You might notice transient blurred vision or mild irritation in the treated area. If redness worsens, if pain increases, or if there is discharge that lasts, contact your clinician promptly.
Allergic reactions are possible, though rare. Seek urgent care if you develop swelling of the face or lips, severe rash or trouble breathing. If you suspect a serious reaction, stop using the medicine and seek medical help right away.
Avoid using this medicine if you have a known allergy to ofloxacin, dexamethasone or other quinolones. Do not use it for a viral or fungal infection unless advised by a clinician. If you wear contact lenses, check with your doctor about whether you should continue wearing them during treatment.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not share the medicine with others, and do not use someone else’s prescription. Store the bottle at room temperature, away from light and heat, and keep it out of reach of children. Discard the bottle after the expiry date or after the recommended open-use period if stated.
