Zyvox is an antibacterial medicine, which contains the active ingredient called linezolid. It belongs to a new class of antibiotics called the oxazolidinones. The action mechanism is due to the selective inhibition of protein synthesis in bacteria. This medication can only be used to treat infections and inflammatory diseases caused by susceptible to anaerobic and aerobic gram-positive microorganisms (including infections accompanied by bacteremia).
Zyvox is mostly used for the treatment of pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital), skin and soft tissues infections, enterococcal infections (including those caused by vancomycin-resistant strains of Enterococcus faecalis and faecium).
The application of the drug Zyvox in New Zealand is contraindicated in several cases, some of which include decreased kidney function, haemodialysis for kidney failure, severely decreased liver function, uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension), anemia, mental disorder with symptoms of schizophrenia and mood disorder, bipolar affective disorder (manic depression), breastfeeding. There have been no adequate and well-controlled studies of the safety of Zyvox during pregnancy. The use of this medication during pregnancy is possible only if the intended benefit of the therapy to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Taking Zyvox during pregnancy should be strictly controlled by the doctor.
Do not use Zyvox in case you are allergic to any of its ingredients. You should inform your health care professional if you had this kind of allergies before. If you begin to experience severe allergic reactions, then you should stop the medicine usage and contact your doctor. This medicine should not be used by children and adolescents under the age of 18. There is not enough information concerning the safety and efficiency of its usage in this age group.
The majority of medications may cause some adverse reactions. Most commonly encountered side-effects of Zyvox include the following conditions: headache, nausea, diarrhea, yeast infection of the moist areas of the body, especially the vagina and mouth (candidiasis). They usually disappear soon after the end of the treatment. If any of the side effects are continuous and it is bothering you, then you should seek medical help as soon as possible.
Some patients noted the occurrence of peripheral neuropathy and neuropathy of the optic nerve, when they were using the drug Zyvox for more than 27 days (the relationship between taking the drug and the development of neuropathy has not been proved).
The side reactions do not depend on the drug’s dosage, and they usually do not require discontinuation of the treatment.
Some adverse reactions from the digestive system include taste perversion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, changes in total bilirubin. From the side of hematopoietic system there is a possibility of developing reversible anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and pancytopenia.
Dosage and Application
The application method and the dosage regimen of the medication depend on the release form and some other important factors that the doctor takes into consideration. The correct dosage of the medicine for each patient is determined by the doctor. It is necessary to strictly observe the instructions on the drug use, which come with the medication and the doctor’s advice in order to get positive results of the treatment.
The dosage regimen and duration of the treatment depend on the pathogen, the location and severity of the infection, as well as on the clinical efficacy.
In the form of infusion it is administered intravenously in a dosage of 600 mg with an interval of 12 hours. The duration of the treatment is commonly 14-28 days.
The patients, who at the beginning of therapy were prescribed the medication Zyvox intravenously, can later be transferred to any dosage form for oral administration. In this case, the selection of the dosage is not required, because oral bioavailability is almost 100%.
During the treatment with the drug Zyvox it is necessary to do clinical blood tests among the patients, who have an increased risk of bleeding, a history of myelosuppression, and in the case of the simultaneous use of medicines that reduce the level of hemoglobin, the number of platelets or their functional properties, as well as in the patients receiving Zyvox for more than 2 weeks.
Inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take in the period of the treatment with Zyvox in New Zealand. The drug can interact badly with some other medications. Before taking the drug ask your doctor about the whole list of side effects and contraindications of Zyvox as the information in this article is not complete.
